How to use the image compressor
- Drop one or more JPG, PNG or WebP images into the box, or click it to pick files.
- Move the Quality slider. Lower values give smaller files; results update automatically.
- Optionally pick an output format or a maximum width to shrink large photos further.
- Check the before/after sizes and click Download for each image.
Lossy vs. lossless compression
JPEG and WebP use lossy compression: they discard detail the eye rarely notices, which is why a photo can drop from 4 MB to 400 KB and still look the same. PNG is lossless and best for screenshots, logos and images with sharp text. If a PNG is a photo, converting it to WebP or JPEG is usually the biggest win.
Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Compression happens with your browser's built-in canvas engine on your own device. The images never leave your computer or phone, which makes this tool safe for private photos and documents.
What quality setting should I use?
For photos, 70–80% usually cuts file size by half or more with no visible difference. Go lower (50–60%) for thumbnails or email attachments, and higher (85–92%) for images you plan to print or edit again.
Why did my PNG barely get smaller?
PNG is a lossless format, so the quality slider has no effect on it. To shrink a PNG, choose WebP or JPEG as the output format, or lower the maximum width. WebP keeps transparency; JPEG replaces it with white.
Is there a file size or number limit?
There is no fixed limit. Very large images (for example 50+ megapixels) depend on your device's memory, and phones may be slower than desktops.
Does compression remove photo metadata?
Yes. Re-encoding through the canvas drops EXIF data such as camera model and GPS location, which is a nice privacy bonus when sharing photos online.
